As Pinky is carried outside, she waves goodbye to her good friend, Mr. Squirrel. He waves goodbye with his tail and wishes her luck on her new adventure. “Squeak, squeak.”
But Pinky’s excitement evaporates as she is carried into the belly of a giant, growling metal creature. She’s seen these creatures roaring in the streets beneath her window in the pet store. “This is a car,” says the boy, who was now her new best friend.
Pinky tried to tell herself that she had to be brave. This was only the first of many new challenges! But instead of feeling brave, Pinky let out a little whine. The boy stroked her ears. “Change can be scary,” he said, comforting her. “Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of you.” His words made her feel better. Pinky—no—ROCKET, looked out the window at the big world beyond and imagined the adventures that awaited her.

Standing on the deck of his infamous ship, the Scarlet Marauder, Captain Rumblebelly’s red cloak billowed in the evening wind as he addressed thousands of loyal pirates on the beach. “Today marks the dawn of a new era!” Captain Rumblebelly declared. “Today, my son will take to the seas, with a ship and a crew of his choosing, to plunder his first enemy vessel as captain, and prove himself worthy of the Rumblebelly fortune. There will be no return without riches.” Three thousand pirates cheered in agreement.
Robin’s fingers danced across the hilt of his sword. He could hardly contain his excitement. The boy had been born gifted, raised by the best, and developed an unwavering belief in his own abilities. Today was his day and he would not disappoint. Swinging on a rope, Robin dismounted with a backflip and landed easily on the deck of the Scarlet Marauder, taking his place beside his father. The crowd roared with applause.
“Now,” Captain Rumbelly said, putting his giant hand on Robin’s shoulder. “My son. You must choose a ship that’s fitting of your spirit.” He gestured out at his fleet of two hundred ships anchored in the emerald waters. “And you must choose a loyal crew that will fight until the end.” He gestured to a group of young pirates standing at the front of the crowd, all eager to prove their worth on the seas.
Robin stomped his foot on the deck. “The Scarlet Marauder will be my ship!” Before Captain Rumblebelly could finish muttering, “But that’s my ship—” Robin pointed to his father’s most experienced captains, “And your captains will be my crew!”
A hush fell over the crowd. No prince had ever been so bold as to lay claim to his father’s ship and crew. Robin met the eyes of his father’s captains, daring them to challenge his royal right. After a long moment, one of them stepped forward. It was Ironclad Isabella. She was known for embarrassing the men in duels. In fact, it was still unsettled if even Captain Rumblebelly had defeated her in a duel. Isabella raised her chin and spoke directly to Robin, “If you think yourself worthy to lead me…” She reached behind her back and pulled two scimitars from their sheaths. “Prove it.” One by one, the other captains joined her, drawing their swords and grunting in agreement, “Aye! Let’s have it boy!”
Robin’s eyes widened in disbelief. For the first time in his life, his hands felt slick with sweat, and his voice cracked as he squeaked, “Very well then!” The duel was on.

Sure, it was neat that, with the flick of a finger, Rose could make gemstones dance and soar through the air, but was it "neat" that she could only use this power to decorate castles? She didn’t want to befriend a weird little prince and move to the countryside to decorate his castle for the glory of the kingdom. But Rose's parents’ passion for doing things the old way meant that Rose was…yep, you guessed it, doomed.
To Rose’s surprise, on the day that Prince Dinkledoo arrives, she doesn’t find him as repulsive as she had imagined. In fact, the quirky little boy has no interest in swords. He prefers art. The two make a deal to trade his sword for her interior design talents as soon as they are far, far away from their parents. If they can just play their parts in the day’s friendship ceremony, Rose might have a chance to live happily ever after.
But when, right on cue, a dragon crashes the party, Prince Dinkledoo doesn’t live up to his end of the bargain. Traditionally, he would draw his sword upon the dragon’s arrival, vow to protect his new best friend, the princess, and lead the giddy knights into battle against the fire-breathing beast. Instead, no surprise, Dinkledoo drops his sword and hides behind a flower bed. “Is it over yet?!”
While all the knights stare in confusion, hungry to dance with the dragon, but waiting for their “fearless” leader to inspire them, Rose realizes her dreams are in jeopardy. If Dinkledoo doesn’t pick up his sword, he’ll be deemed unworthy of her friendship and she’ll be doomed to befriend a different prince who will certainly not be giving up his sword.
On the other hand, Prince Dinkledoo's abandoned sword is calling Rose's name. So shiny. This could be Rose's chance to prove herself once and for all. Rose wonders if she should encourage Prince Dinkledoo to take up his sword and play his part, or test her own metal? As the dragon destroys one castle tower after another (all of which Rose had painstakingly decorated with jewels FYI), Rose has only split seconds to make a decision that will determine the rest of her life.

Bell pretends to care and then hangs up, irritated. This is the seventh time that her parents had gone “missing”. It usually just meant that they dropped their phones in the ocean, or lost cell service in the jungle because they cared more about their jobs as field biologists than their own daughter. Tired of being left behind, Bell decides to teach her parents a lesson. She’s running away.
In the haste of packing, Bell stumbles upon a forgotten golden ring, an old birthday gift from her absent parents. To Bell, it had been a symbol for how little they knew her because her jewelry just got in the way of rock climbing. So Bell stuffed the ring in a drawer and erased it from her memory. But now she sees a connection to a mysterious wall in her cabin's basement. The grooves of the ring that she once scorned fit perfectly inside a carving on the wall. It wasn’t a wall, it was a door. The ring was a key. And the truth behind her parents' disappearances was on the other side.
